Custom Stencils - Reusable Made-to-Order Stencils for Painting

Create your own reusable custom stencil from a word, a phrase, a monogram or your own logo. Every stencil is laser cut to order from mylar film in your choice of width, font and thickness — there is no setup fee and no minimum order.

How to order

• Select your stencil width.
• Select material thickness — 7 mil or 10 mil.
• Select a font from the drop-down menu.
• Type your name or phrase in the personalization box to preview the available fonts, then pick your favorite.

For a custom logo, company logo or original design, send us your stencil-ready design file and we will cut it for you.

Choose your font

Mylar stencil material

All grades of mylar are made from the same translucent, food-grade material. Mylar is flexible but dimensionally stable, so unlike vinyl it will not stretch out of shape. The only difference between grades is thickness: a mil is 1/1000th of an inch, so for reference newspaper is roughly 3 mil and a business card about 12 mil.

• 7 mil — stiffer and crisper, best for flat surfaces and fine lettering.
• 10 mil — heavier and more durable for repeated use, slightly more opaque and more forgiving on curved or textured surfaces.

Neither grade has an adhesive backing, so plan on tape or a repositionable stencil spray.

Sizing your stencil

The size listed is the size of the actual area you will be painting. We add an extra 1.5 inches of mylar around the design as a frame, which makes the stencil far easier to hold and tape in place.

The smallest letter height we can cut cleanly is 0.5 inches. Height varies depending on the number of letters, the width you select and the font you choose, so measure the area you intend to stencil before ordering. If you need a phrase sized precisely, or a width that is not listed, contact us and we will mock it up and recommend the right size.

How to use your stencil

Step 1: hold the stencil in place

Most people use masking tape or painter's tape. For the crispest edges, consider a repositionable stencil adhesive — a light spray applied to the back of the stencil that holds the whole surface down rather than just the taped corners. The adhesive wears off gradually with use and can simply be re-sprayed. It leaves no residue and will not damage your surface; it removes with acetone or any adhesive remover and is sold at most craft and art supply stores.

Step 2: apply the paint

For decorating and sign making, a dry stencil paint applied with a stencil brush gives you the most control and the cleanest finish. Load the brush lightly and dab rather than sweep — overloading the brush is the main cause of paint bleeding under the edges. Craft supply stores carry a wide range of paints made specifically for decorative stenciling.

Caring for your stencil

Clean the stencil after each use with warm soapy water or mineral spirits, depending on your paint. Lay it flat to dry and store it flat rather than rolled so it keeps its shape for the next project.
